Hello Alfred and Drenda.  Sam and I completed an exciting 3rd season in the field and are very much looking forward to the 2006-07 season.  I wanted to forward a nice picture my wife took of him while we were on a recent beach trip.  Sam recently turned age 3 in March and is maturing nicely.  He has now been on two wild pheasant hunts out west with some exposure to Huns and Sharptails.  In addition, we have hunted quail, ducks, and had his first
dove hunt this last year where he did a lot of retrieving.  As you are familiar with your Jack and might guess with Sam, he has a gentle nature and is a real gentleman around family, guests, children, and other pets.

Hope you all are doing well and talk with you soon.
David

P.S. Next to hunting, I think Sam's favorite place is the beach.  He points
and chases the sea birds as long as you will allow him.

Subject: My Pup

Hello,

I bet you don't get a lot of e-mails about Llewellin duck retrievers.  We have no upland seasons in Colorado until the 20th of November so we have been going duck hunting.  Shot one Saturday that flew a couple hundred yards
into a grass field with the grass about 16-18 inches tall.  After looking for a few minutes I was just about to give up when Rhen started to get real birdy, we had already seen three pheasants leave this field so I thought he
was on the old sent of one of that mornings pheasants. The more excited he got the more I thought I was going to see my first point out of my pup on a wild bird, at that point he reached into the grass and pulled up the most
beautyful Mallard drake I have seen in years. We would have never found it without him.  Mr. King told me last year when I got him that the Bomber line has an excellent nose, well I am a believer.  Thanks again for the wonderful breading you have done. This little 11 month old pup has given me more hunting enjoyment in his life than in my first 38 years without him.

Thanks Again!!

Sorry to be so late on answering your email.  It got lost in all of this junk email we get anymore.  My wife Drenda has taught me now how to get rid of it for good.  I am not the best on a computer, but learn something new every time I set down to answer my email.  ( I love the spell check).

I appreciate you telling me about your duck retrieving Llewellin.  That is the first anyone has told me about one doing that.  I am not a duck hunter even though I came from a part of Ark. Where all my brothers live for duck hunting.  I have always been a bird hunter, mostly quail.  I had a cat when I was 10 years old that would go hunting with me, with my 22 rife, that would stalk quail.  I killed my first quail in front of that cat.  When I shot the quail the cat left me and never went hunting with me again.

Well got to go now and I am sorry for the delay answering you.  I am sending a copy of this to my Web Master Tim Stone to add it to my reference page on my web site.

Hello Alfred and Drenda.  I hope you are doing well.  I wanted to forward a recent picture of Sam that I took on October 7.  He is now approaching approximately 1yr 8mos old.  I have recently taken him out west on a one week trip to North Dakota to hunt primarily pheasants, and he did great…….had some great points and retrieves.  He is also doing great this year on quail.  I am really looking forward to his second season in the field this year.

Thanks for your great work and take good care.

Mr. King - We have one of your dogs - Got him just around this time 2 years ago.  We had some problems with him in the beginning, but you were so kind to advise us and with some training and patience he is beginning to settle in nicely.

We have a large wild area in the back and let him run free when no one is around and he is a beautiful site to behold!  His name is Bandit.  He was from the Gladystone line.  I have to find his papers.  But I just wanted to tell you he has really become a good pup!  He gets so many compliments because he is such a handsome boy.  And he is the only one of his kind around here!

I so admire and respect how you treat your clients and dogs.   Thank you again - hope you and  your family are all well!

Subject:  Jazz from Royacelle IV and King's Royacelle Alice will be 1 year old on November 18th.

Just a quick note to tell you how our wonderful little Llewellin Setter JAZZ who we picked up from you February 15th this past winter is coming along her 1st hunting was in North Dakota in sept and the very 1st time on wild birds she made two wonderful points on Sharpie's which we promptly shot for her.

On the second morning we thought we would try to find some Huns so we put this great little dog down and off we went within the first few seconds she was wild making game and flushed about 10 or so pheasants and chased, I thought Oh-no but managed to get her back under control  as we got going again she got very birdie again and I thought I might have to pick her up as she was just flying around this old broken down farmstead just as I was about to call her in again she started past a small old feed lot and SLAMMED into the most glorious point I have seen in many years as we approached about 40-50 pheasants flushed from this small piece of cover, Jazz kept her composure thru this event and stood her point thru the whole thing.

I was dumbfounded to say the least she seemed to almost be fully broke without a single attempt at that. Wow what a start, as we worked the cover over the next hour or so she managed to find and point 2 coveys of Huns one of which she held long enough for us to get to her and shoot a couple of birds and then worked the singles like an old pro would have .  both my son and I came back to the truck with a brace of birds each and during all of this she managed to point 4-5 more Pheasants (to bad the season was not open yet) .

Since this first couple of days she has continue to amaze us on every occasion that we put her on the ground .  people who have had the pleasure have said that you would think she was 3 or 4 yrs old (and these are people who would know) .

just so you know she is also a awesome member of our family and seems to live to pester our Golden and to constantly keep us laughing with her nutty antics.   Will send pictures soon as it seems we keep forgetting to take her photo while she is out in the field.

Thanks Tim & Cheryl Fox

Dear Mr. and Mrs. King,
A friend of ours is looking for a dog for their family, and I will pass along your web site address.  We love our dogs!
Suzy and Nan are the best.  Suzy is of course the queen of the house, sleeping on our bed every night.  Nan gets her turn when Suzy is hunting.  Joe usually takes both hunting, but occasionally he can only take one, because his buddy
brings his dog, and the "Queen " always gets to go.  You were right that the first thing you do is convince them that they are not people, then you can train them.  Well, we have failed in that both of them are people, just 4-legged people.  I hope you are well, and that you have a wonderful year.
Take care.  Sincerely,

I very interested in you dogs. I have been searching for a English setter for about a month or two now. I never really understood just how much there is about the breed.

I would like a bird dog first and foremost, however I would also like to have a good family dog. And this llewellin breed seems to fit the bill just right.

I would like to know a few things about your program. I want to buy from some one that treats their dogs as if they are their own. So far your kennel is far ahead of everyone else.

I would like to ask you a couple questions. Have you ever heard of the Hicks Ranch Llewellin Setters.

Again after browsing through all these breeders I haven't really seen any dogs that compare to yours. Anyone that is supported by Hunting with Hank, must be a breeder above breeders. I really enjoy that show, it is one of the few shows that illustrate taking care of the land with hunters education.

I am planning a trip to Mississippi this spring , so I just might have to stop by and take a look at your kennels.
Any information you can give me would be most helpful.

Thank you for your attention.

To the kings,

I bought chessie from you about three christmas's ago, we are finally getting out and hunting a little.  We went pheasant hunting in January in the Oklahoma panhandle it was dry and windy.  This was chessie's first ever
pheasant hunt.  She was thrown in with a couple of proven setters, who I knew were pretty good dogs.  But after two days of hunting there was a new kid on the block, Chessie pointed bird after bird, I think my brother
enjoyed her more than any one, he was amazed by her nose for game.  Any way I have attached a picture with my brother, my friend brad, and I, with Chessie after a long weekend hunt.  We went to sho-me birds this week, her
first time on chukar, she was equally amazing, we had a blast.

Dear Alfred and Drenda,

Just wanted to let you know that we received our new pup just fine she seem to take the flight well. She is a great looking setter and I am happy to have her. I went for a lot of years before I was able to get one of your pups and wow know I have two of them not including the English setter and Black Lab I have. The first dog I got from you was a male out of Ashley. I haven't been able to spend as much time working him as I would have liked to so far but he is still doing great. He "Blue" is the best pet I have ever had and he has such a desire to find birds I am so pleased with him. Blue is now about 8-months and when I get some new photos of both dogs on my computer I will send them to you.

Drenda,

It's great to hear from you!  I periodically visit your web site.  It looks wonderful!  Yeager and I are doing stupendous.  She's a wonderful companion, friend...not to mention a great hunter!  I recently had the pleasure of
hunting with a number of corporate executives with a Fortune 500 company. Yeager did so well that everyone wants to come back and hunt with me/her. My friend/neighbor  who had invited me on the hunt, recently told me about
some of the e-mails he received from the individuals we hunted with. Apparently, I didn't make as big of an impression as Yeager because I'm referred to as "the neighbor with Yeager".  They all couldn't believe that I never raised my voice to her and that she listened so well.  One man remarked "Do you talk that softly to your children?  She literally brought tears to my eyes.  She never ceases to amaze me.  I'll send pictures as soon as I can.

Dan

P.S.  I recently commissioned an artist friend to paint her in a Northern Michigan scene with woodcock(my favorite bird to hunt-grouse is a CLOSE second).   I'll let you know when it's done.

Sorry delay in answering, been in Texas and Kentucky hunting.

At the moment I do not think we have any females available, I will check with wife she keeps up with that, if not we will notify you when we have another litter which should be soon.

Honestly there is not one dog or female that I would be better than the others.  If they do not me what I am looking for in a dog or do not produce that same thing.  I have them spade and sell them as a trained dogs.

Seldom ever this happens but it does ever few years.  Nature has it on way sometimes.

You sound like your set up to train like they should be trained.

I will get my wife to put your on the mailing list.

Thanks for contacting me, If I can answer any other questions, just let me know.

Thank you, I will wait for the good news.  I definitely want a Female Blue Belton, that is heavily ticked.  I would like one out of a breeding who's parents tend to run bigger in the field, because it is always easier to keep a dog in close, then to get one who works too close, to go out.  Also, I would like a Taller, larger dog if possible, I have seen many Setters that I considered to be too fine boned and small, I do not want this.   I want a hardy, strong boned dog, that can work for several hours, without any problems.  Looking forward to hearing back from you when the puppies
are born.  I have heard very good reports of the Llewellin setters you breed.  I know a guy (Mark Spangler) who has two setters from your kennels and gives you very high compliments for breeding such fine hunting dogs.

Rex's Sire was King's Black Gladstonyo. Dam was King's Gladstone Dinky. I have been debating with myself as to whether or not  we should get another setter.

The debate is over. Please let me know the status of yor next litter. I also left you a voice mail tonight. I am planning a trip to Ark late February and would love to stop by.

Subject: Molly and Maddie

Al & Drenda,

Just wanted to thank you again.  Maddie is certainly a great addition to our family just like Molly was a year and a half ago.  How fortunate we are are to have to great great King Llewellins.  Molly took to Maddie instantly.  Some days it's like having two little ones in the house again with the rippin' & rompin' that goes on.  It's so enjoyable to watch them.

Maddie went to the vet for her final shots and weighed 15.8 lbs.  Now that the holidays are over we'll begin her backyard basic training as well as the fly rod with a wing.

Molly is certainly happy that deer season is over in PA.  Now she can get down to some serious bird hunting.  She gets really upset when she sees Mickey getting ready to go hunting and doesn't take her with him.  In early December our friend called Mickey at work and asked if he could take her out as they had seen a covey of quail.  She did excellent for him.  He said he and his family were having quail for dinner.  I think he now has the bug for more bird hunting.  He called last night and is ready to go on New Year's Day.  We also have met a young man who's parent live up the street from us.  He's a huge fan of Hunting with Hank.  He lives near Boston and is making the trip to our area once a month to hunt with Molly.

Thanks again for all you have done.  We'll keep you posted on both dogs.

Bless you and yours in the coming year and always.

Dear Al and Drenda,
I hope your year is off to a good start.  Just wanted to update you on a couple of our "babies".  When we last visited on New Years Eve morning, I had brought Nancy and the kids up to hunt.  My son Josh, of course, had been with me on previous trips, but it was the first time out for Nancy and Jessi.  They wanted to come along to "watch the dogs work".  I suspect they wondered if these pampered pets could actually be bird dogs.  I brought two of my younger pups, Sioux (7 months old out of Ashley) and Annie (4 1/2 months old out of Royacelle IV).  It was Sioux's
2nd time out and Annie's first.  Since y'all had to leave shortly after we got there, I didn't get to tell you about our day.  By noon, we had killed 17 of the 20 birds.  Those two pups hit the ground hunting like veterans. They pointed, backed and retrieved every time without fail!  I can't tell some of my friends about it; they would think I was halucinating. (Of course, they hunt pointers.)  I, however, was not surprised one bit.  I have done a good bit of yard work with them - Sioux since she was 6 weeks old and Annie I guess since she got her eyes open - and we have loved on them 'till it was rediculous, but it's still pretty amazing that they do so well at such a young age.  I have bought 11 llewellins from you over the years, plus raised a litter of my own, and the results have consistently been quite impressive.

Thanks for devoting yourselves to the breeding of such quality dogs. There's no telling how many of us have benefitted from your dedication and hard work.  Hope to see you again soon!

Hope y'all are doing great.  Just wanted to drop you a note letting you know our family member is doing great.  Greg named him Blu.  At six months we took him on his first hunt.  He is working off his check chord and pointed up his first Quail.  Some of our friends are just amazed with him.  One has a dog he has 5,000 invested in that can't begin to do what Blu does by nature.  He is a spoiled house dog and loves to go riding with us in the car.  We are getting invited to places to hunt just because people are so impressed with Blu and want to see him work.  One of our neighbors has had bird dogs in the past and told us it would be a year or better before we could hunt behind him.  When Blu snapped to a picture perfect point on a training aid we made a believer out of him.  Now he will sit out in his front yard just to watch Blu work and ask to buy him.  We are totally pleased and in love with Blu. Hope y'all have a great Christmas.

Sure glad to hear from you all.  Glad your enjoying your Llewellin pup.  They still amaze me and I have had them for 37 years.  The reason Blu is doing so well, is because of the loving "bond" you made with him as a pup.  Llewellin pups are just like raising babies, the more love and attention you give them, the more they love you and want to please you.  Keep in touch and send email or mail me some photos  of him on point when ever you can.

Just a quick note to tell you how pleased I am with my puppy.  Molly is now 8 months old and is 23" tall and weighs 43 lbs.  She quickly became a full fledged member of the family.

She has taken well to her basic training and best of all--she loves birds.  She has already pointed a few woodcock and this weekend I hope to put her on a grouse.  At this rate I think she will be ready to tackle pheasants
before the season ends.

I am very happy with her and the quality of her breeding is evident everyday.  She's every thing you promised she would be and more.

I thought you might enjoy an update on beautiful Jessie.  She is indeed just as pretty as we thought she would be as she sat asleep in my lap in your kitchen.  She is extremely sound and good moving with a very balanced and graceful body type.  She is bold, energetic and yet so sweet natured.  We have enjoyed her every minute.  She spent much of the summer traveling and camping with us on weekend trips to the mountains.   I am glad to have had the summer to spend with her meeting people, cattle, barbed wire fences, fish, lots of grasshoppers and puppy sized streams.  We even let her play in her home water, the Arkansas River.  Of course, at it's beginnings in the high mountains above Leadville it is just a few yards wide.  It was too dark to photograph but some summer we will return and take a photo for you to add to your archives. We introduced her to quail a few times in July and August but it has only been the! se last two weekends that she really got a taste of hunting.  And boy, did she impress all those who saw her work.  She was influencing beautifully - turned if I turned in the field - would venture out full speed ahead but always kept her eye on us.  She found quail and chukers that were missed by several older, experienced dogs.  We were very pleased to say the least.  She will be going to the trainer's in mid-November for 3 to 4 weeks (that is if we can stand to part with her).  Gary can work her on a steady diet of quail every day where we cannot.  He is very excited to be working with her.  She bowled him over when he saw her at 12 weeks.  Even then, she went right for his pigeon aviary and tried to get through the door.  He opened it and she rushed in.  She would have climbed to the top of the roost if he had given her time.

I must get some new digital pictures of her but every time we have her around birds, we are having so much fun watching her we forget to take photos.  Although I must say, she doesn't give us long photo opportunities.  She is usually very busy!  I think we'll have to pose that great pointing photo.

I hope you are both doing well.  I enjoyed seeing your new puppy format on your web site.  It is nice having pedigree and photos together.  Best of all tho was the photo of Logan.  Congratulations!  I know you two are always busy but drop us a sentence or two sometime soon.  I like to know that all is well.

Thanks for keeping us on your puppy list all that time!

Just a note to let you know we made it home with "Piper" ok. We started with her in the travel box, but
she was in Janet's lap before we hit the blacktop.
Took her for her 8 week trip to the vet last Friday; he was impressed with her and mentioned how thorough your imunization records were.
Piper is truly a pleasure to have.  She has taken to Housebreaking readily - faster than any dog we've ever
had, and eagerly comes to her name almost every time.  have been flipping the quail wing around and she already
gives it a couple of good points before she tries to play with it.
Thanks again for such a fine dog.

He walked right up to his half brother Governor Roy Barnes Peagler's pen and didn't cower when the other dogs began jumping up and down and barking. Spot and our 14 year old Himalayan cat have sniffed each other and layed on our bed together. The two Jack Russels are being gradually introduced to their new family member. He is a great looking puppy with a wonderful  disposition and a fantastic appetitie after the flight to Atlanta from Little Rock and a 21/2 hour drive to Americus.
Thanks again and we will keep you apprised of Spots progress. If he is like his half brother Roy he will be hunting, backing and retrieving come November.
Thanks again,
George Peagler

Just thought I'd let you know Lizzy is ten months old and she is pointing, had her first couple backs and retrieves last weekend.  So the garuanttee has been met on the abilities part, know we just gotta get through the hips and I am confident that'll be smooth. Been working with a local dog trainer in Eldorado and word is sure traveling around about her. Got a few pointer guys wanting to see her. Had a couple offers too. KNOW WAY. Lookin forward to another decade of hunting behind her and then another five years are so with me sleeping at her feet in front of the fire.(lol) I'm telling you if she keeps going the way she's going that's the way it'll be!!!

Don't forget next spring I'm looking toward getting a male outta lady royacelle and Gladstonyo Jack if you decide to do that breeding. Have you done that one before.  What kinda range does Gladstonyo have? comparable to royacelle. I'm sure they'll make some great dogs know matter.  Was wondering would it be possible for me to go ahead and send you the money for my next pup in the later in the summer so I can be paid in full ahead of time?  Then just wait for the litter and breeding I'm looking for to become available.

Thank you guys for everything

Sincerely,

to tell how wonderfully pleased I am with Sawyer, my King Llewellin. This past weekend we participated in a fun trial at our local club. There were eight dogs to run, with four being Llewellins. Sawyer ran in the first brace, which turned out to be a blessing due to the heat. We scored on four points, four kills, but no retrieves. We're still working on that part. We
placed 3rd, and last fall in this same group of dogs we were 2nd with eight points and four kills.

Sawyer is a great family pet, despite being a kennel dog, and I am hopeful that in a couple of years, I will call again for my second Llewellin. No doubt about where he would come from though. King's all the way.

Thanks for the video and description of puppies.  I'm interested in one of the puppies in litter No. 01-B, whelped Jan 8, 2001.  I would like to have either male #1, 2, or 3.  All of your dogs, I'm sure, are very fine and I find it hard to select from these three.  Would you select one for me, from these three?  I prefer a larger/heavier dog that is why I chose one from your King's line.  It sounds trivial I know but, I'd prefer one that had a black eye patch (request from my daughter). However, that is of the least importance to me.  Would you like me to send a deposit and how much?  When would you like me to come and pick him up?  Can you also tell me how much King's Bomber IV and King's Bomberstone Star weigh?  I would have written sooner but, I was away on business.  Alfred, I got a better appreciation of your effort to preserve not only the breed but the different lines of the breed from your video. My hat is off to you for all the hard work, effort and interest you place in the breed.  Please continue to fight the good fight. I hope your trip to Kansas was productive.  Looking forward to meeting you,

Thanks Randy.

Dear Mr and Mrs King
The pup I bought from you is three now.
He is a wonderful dog named Chase, from your Ashly and Scotti.
We shared a great hunting season in eastern Oregon. As my hunting partner said"best dog I ever hunted with."
Chase sired a litter a while back and I took a little female named Patch who will be two in sept. I'm considering breeding her to my other dog,Tuck, who is now two. Though I may look for another sire. Tuck is of a different look. More English, long, and skinney but with a powerful gate. He covers the desert country well but behind Chase on the training.

Well I won't bore you with my rambling.
Just wanted to say thanks.

Have a great 2001

Hope you had a pleasant Christmas and happy new year

I just wanted to touch base with you regarding the pup that you sent last week.

First, the pup handled the shipping perfectly. she is beautiful and full of energy!

Second, and most importantly, I can not tell you how impressed I am with both of you on honoring your guarantee. When I bought the original pup, I read the paper but, I'm in Michigan and you're in Arkansas, so I thought that this was just words on paper.  you guys were perfectly true to your words.  I am sorry that I had to exercise the contract, but you handled the issue as professionally as anyone could ever have wished.   Thanks for the effort and CLASS!  I would love to be on your reference list if you wish, because there are people out there that wouldn't believe the guarantee without someone like me telling the story.

I will call when I get home from this trip, but I wanted to let you know my thoughts today.

Thanks again,

Hello Alfred,

I have just reviewed your refines listing and am offering you one more.

I have owned one of Alfred O. King Sr. Llewellin Setters for six years and he is my best pointing bird dog of four of other breeds.  For his first hunting season he had seven months of backyard and local field training and was pointing, relocating, backing (both to sight and beeper collar), stop at flush, retrieving and tracking running birds.  He is equally good on pheasant as well as quail and I am sure on other birds if they were available.  His first season found 55 roosters in the bag and an uncounted number of quail.

He is also a good house pet and family dog.  He does like to play and seeks companionship without making a bother of himself.  He has been to the office several times and on vacation.

To review a article that features this dog go to: http://www.ks-mo-hunt.org/upland_bird_hunting_article.htm

The highest praise I can offer for Alfred's dogs is to state that I have settled on his kennel of Llewellins for all my future bird dogs.

Spend your time hunting rather than hunting for a place to hunt!

I have three dogs out of King's Kennel. They all hunt and they all hunted by one. I have one male that was slower than the rest but I still shot and retrieved birds over him his first year. Mr. King will guarantee his dogs to hunt. The initial cost is nothing compared to buying a dog and feeding it for three years before you decide it can not hunt. I will be having a litter in a few weeks and will post them to sell. Mr. King has more to chose from and more experience. I wouldn't give up on the dog you have now. Some do come along a little slower than others. Work on basic training and get your dog into birds and more birds. Birds make a dog.

    Good Luck,

First let me say that I have recently purchased my first Lew's . I dont know anybody in my area that has one so I can't compare mine against anybody elses.  Tweleve years ago I purchesed a setter for my first hunting dog and fell in love with them. Since then I have helped others with thier training and enjoy it as a  hobby. My two pups that I got from King have so far lived upto every thing I have read about the breed. I never imagined too have another setter that would thrill
me as much as my first dog. He was the once in the life time hunter everyone should get to own. The new pups are now 4 and 5 months old. I would not hesitate to take you out in the field today and let you hunt over them. They point, back, retrevie to hand and follow comands given by whistle or voice. Are they perfect?  NO. But in the last tweleve years I have been hunting with setters, they are about six months further along then any I have ever worked with. They seem to yearn for the attention and trainig. I often question wether I am pushing them along to fast. So far they show no signs of this. As far as price I to was a little hesitant at first to pay more for a Lew then what seemed more common for a setter. I would do it again and will as soon as I find some one who makes a bigger bed. or a softer couch to sleep on. There are no garuantees any dog no matter how good the parents are will carry all the right genes. My first setter came from a litter of 11 pups. At about seven years I was told he was the only one that hunted, hard to believe but thats what I was told.

Ron Scudder

I recently purchased two pups from King and having them only since 30 Jan I cant but help to think I made a very good choice. I needed a dog to replace a special one I lost this last summer, They both have fullfiled that and then some. The older dog (female) already shows impresive signs towards the birds I raise and the obedence training we have begun. All this at only 3 months old. At the rate of learning she is accepting I will need to start giving advance obedence training by the time she is 5 months. AlI this is being accomplished with onlly 15 min of work each day and the rest play time either.
The younger male is only 2 months 3 weeks and already points and retrieves, not solid but diffently shows the beginings for becoming a good gun dog. By far I am not a hard trainer and believe they should be companions/ pets first, hunting prodigees second. They both run to the holding pin to watch there birds every chance they get. I cant wait tell I get the chance to put themon live birds for the first time.

Daughter of Hank's Ringo Bondhu and Irishking Bondhu Tess, Katiebondhu is doing very well she is 2yrs old now and it seems like it was just yesterday when we were anxiously waiting her arrival.

I am sending you some pictures of her hunting in a preserve here in New Mexico thought you would enjoy them, and to let you know we are currently working on setting up a hunt for pheasants in Kansas; should be lots of fun.

We are so happy with her and yes she still comes in to sleep on the bed every night with her own blanket imagine that. ha ha ha

In the future we would love to get another one from you guys maybe even two.

We would appreciate it if you would put her picture on your photo album on your website as we are so proud of her, and she is a perfect example of how your bloodline is doing in New Mexico, I don't think there are many out this way.

Thanks and have a good day.

Subject: Our Llewellin Puppy Update

Hello Drenda and Alfred,

I wanted to write and let you know how our puppy is doing.  We picked him up back in September....he was out of the 3X litter.  We decided that he really looked like a Henry so we're calling him Hank for short.  He is already 38 pounds and is just now 5 months old.

From day one, Hank has been an absolute joy.  He is extremely smart and very attached to us (and us to him).

I've never had a dog respond to training this well.  He is definitely still a puppy, but he learns everything so quickly and is crazy about anything that flies.

Hank and I go around our farm (50 acres) about 3 times a day.  He stays in front of me and watches for me to change directions.  I like to hold my arm out when I change direction or want a dog to hunt in a specific area.  Hank just picked up on this after 3 days of being here...at 3 months old!

Here are some pictures of him from today's trip.  And, of course, some extra pictures of Hank to show you that we are strictly adhering to your "Never ever spoil your bird dog" motto.  ;-)

Llewellins are truly wonderful!  I can't wait to see him point his first covey.

Thanks so much!

Hi, Keeper.  I see you will not allow yourself to be outdone!  Keep up the good work and remember who feeds you that dinner now.  I told your Mom & Dad (Daisy and Wily) you are doing great and showed them the photos.  We are all v-e-r-y happy that you are fitting in sooooo well.

I know your pedigree is exceptional and there are not a lot of pups that have been bred as true to line as you have; BUT remember, when you start to feel overconfident ask Tuppy what happens when you get too cocky.  Tell Mike and Carol Hello for us and always be nice to them.

Don't forget that you are due for the rest of your shots on the 15th.

Dear Wily and Daisy,
Thanks for everything.  I won't be home for dinner anytime soon.  I hopped a jetliner to Oregon Thursday and have a new name. "Keeper".  It has taken me 24 hours to take control of this household and show the existing muts some Southern style.  The pictures should give an Idea of what I am saying.  Tomorrow we leave for a few days in northern Nevada where I can possible charm the members of the Humboldt Hunting club and their cooks.  I'll keep in touch.
Bye for now

Hi Al & Drenda!!  Hope everything is going well for you.

Sorry I haven't written you guys sooner.  Wanted to update you on our boy Pete.  What a wonderful little dog.  We picked him up from you on 12/27/02 at 6 weeks.  from 02HH litter.  He looks so much like his Dad Roy.  He's
just over 5 months now & his training is going great.  We get out to the field at least twice a week & he just loves to hunt.  At first he was kind of casual in the field but in the last few weeks he's been hunting like a mad man.  It's hard get him to even stop for a drink.  We cover about two miles every time out.  I do anyway.  Pete probably covers about 10-20. We've bumped into pheasants twice since we've been doing this.  Just started planting quail for him last weekend.  He wanted to move right in on them the first time & had to be whoa'd with the check cord.

The second time out he would point from 10-15 yards out & would hold them pretty well.  I know that will just continue to get better.  He'll come to both the whistle the tone button on his collar.  Will also quarter & whoa to the whistle.  Even after everything I read I still couldn't believe how quickly he caught on to everything.

Attached are a few pictures.  We have so many its hard to pick the best. These were all taken at about 4 months.  I have one of a beautiful point in the field on Sunday night that I'll send tomorrow.  Don't have it with me here at work.  He really looks like his dad in this one.

Also, he loves to play fetch at home & did a pretty good job in the field at first.  Now he won't have anything to do with the quail dummy in the field but does a good job in the yard still.

Is it just time to move on to retrieving real birds?

Thanks!!

He's looking kinda tired.  Must have been
to the field earlier in the day.

Last night was the third time we've worked on birds & he continues to amaze me.  He seems to be quarting & hunting cover better after having a few birds under his belt.  That's not to say he was doing bad before, he's just doing an incredible job now.  I wish hunting season were here.  We tried & few live bird retrieves last night & he did a pretty good job.  He doesn't
always bring it all the way back but pretty close.  Nice soft mouth too. We'll continue to play fetch daily.  It's usually Pete's idea to play fetch with one of his toys.  He's even got the neighbors playing with him almost every day.

Below is a picture from last Sunday.  This was his second day on live birds & his first point on a live bird without being whoa'd with the check cord.

I appreciate all your advise.  Thanks again for such a wonderful dog.

I had a questions on your Gordons. I love the looks of this breed and feel that having one would be a good addition. How are they when you compare them to a Llewellin? Are they as easy to train and willing to work. What is their
disposition in the home and around kids. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you again for having such great dogs. Louie is my pride and joy.

Subject: Scout's doing well

March 13, 2002

Alfred and Drenda,

It took Scout about 24 hours to establish his control of the Henry House. He's now 10 weeks old (see below) and my daughters, Regan and Delaney, are in love with him. As with all puppies, especially males it seems, he has a little biting problem when he plays, but the girls are learning how to discourage him and stick a rope toy in his mouth.

He's now only getting up once in the middle of the night to be let out of his kennel to piddle outside. He's an absolute lover when he's not terrorizing the girls or the older dogs. Yesterday evening, after he played for a couple of hours with the Brittany pup next door, Scout and I did the half-mile circle around the block with him towing his 30-foot-lead rope all the way. He's a stout little guy, and his legs have grown about two inches in the last week.

Maggie (11-year-old Llewellin) and Katie (9-year-old Viszla) are tolerating him better, too, now that Scout finally figured out that Maggie is not interested in nursing him.

Scout's going to make a good dog, and I couldn't be more pleased with him. I've had him up to the office a couple of times, and he just sleeps in his kennel while I work. He's charmed several people in the office about the
breed and King Llewellin Setters, so you'll probably be hearing from them soon. Ashley Fors is looking for a setter pup for herself and one for her dad, who's a bird hunter.

God bless and hope all is well in Arkansas,
Warren Henry

Dear Drenda and Alfred,

We hope all is well with you and yours. I'm sure you'll enjoy the attached picture -- I protested to Stephanie that there was no possible way to get three dogs and two little girls to hold still for a Christmas picture, but
Stephanie insisted that we try, and, once again, she was right.

Pretty amazing picture. Regan is now 8 and Delaney is 6 -- and, left to right are....
Dottie (7 months), Maggie (13 years, and still healthy) and Scout (2 years).

I thought it was pretty cool to see three generations of dogs --
Maggie Bomber/Gladstone, 13 years old and still healthy),
Scout (Bondhu/Royacelle, 2 years old) and
Dottie (Bondhu/ Bondhu, 7 months old) is the ultimate princess -- very delicate and smart.

At a Christmas party last night, I had an interesting conversation with a bird-hunting guide who insisted that "real" bird dogs should never be treated as pets. No, he's never owned a Llewellin.

Have a great Christmas.

Dear Mr. King,

I hope that you and your family are doing well.  I wanted to write you about my llewelin setter, Joe (General Bombers Joe).  Joe is our 4 yr old llewelin that we bought from you.  As you can see from the pictures below, he's a
wonderful dog, both in the home with the kids and in the field (I've hunted him every season).  He has a great nose and wonderful instincts in the field.  He's a real gentlemen and loves to be around dogs and kids.

I have a real problem in that my company is transferring me and the family to Japan for two years.  It's a great opportunity, but one that will force us to find a temporary home for Joe for those 2 years out of the country.
We currently live in Memphis and will return as soon as the Japan stint is finished.  Leaving Joe has been the toughest decision in the world to make, but if we can find a good temporary home for him then we will feel much
better about the situation.  We are talking to friends and family, but so far, we haven't found the right fit yet.

If you know of anyone who may be interested or if you have any suggestions please let me know.

Thank you very much for your help in advance,
David

terrific pet.
We shot over her several times in her first season.  She finds and points beautifully, recalls well most of the time, takes directions well, and will retrieve a bumper, but not a dead bird yet (we haven't pushed for this).
More to the point, I think Calvin likes his bird dog better than me. She is perfectly housebroken and understands complete sentences.  She has a wicked sense of humor and gets along with our Sheltie and cats well.
Anyway, her birthday is tomorrow and we wanted to let you know she's doing well and we think she's terrific.

I'm going try very hard to limit myself to one puppy, although I'll need another one in a couple of years.

We're now living just north of Oklahoma City, although we still spend a lot of time with the Stephensons, who are still in Dallas. By the way, their King Llewellyn, Shadow, is also doing great. He's as pretty as ever and as well-mannered. We're now on an acre with an electronic fence, so it's as good as it gets in the suburbs for dogs.

As I said, a lot of water has flowed under the bridge. When we bought Maggie, Steph and I had not yet married. Now we have, resulting in two gorgeous little girls, Regan (6) and Delaney (4) (see attached). God's been good to us.

Back to business. I need another dog. This time a male -- I'm so completely outnumbered by females in my house, I need some back-up. What I'd really like to do is get a clone of Shadow, Tom's dog. I'll send you his particulars Monday, when Tom faxes them to me. Shadow was also whelped in ate winter 1991, and he's a classic blue belton, thin chest, small long head type Llewellyn. I'll try to e-mail you pics of both Maggie and Shadow in the near future.

Maggie, on the other hand, remains a "big-boned gal." Her number is 1382999, and she's out of King's Black Gladstonyo 1330913 and King's Gladstone Sherri 1324680. Referring to your website, she looks exactly like King's Gladstonyo  Jacki, with the tri-color and black saddle, but Maggie's a little bigger across the head, and her chest is a good third wider than Shadow's.

Anyway, my first choice would be a male out of Shadow's line, my second would be a male out of Maggie's. (I'll take a female if you have one you really like. I'd pay anything to clone Maggie.) Mainly I want a solid quail hunter that will be a great pet for my girls -- in other words, a Llewellyn.

I also continue to be tempted by one of the Russians, but I want to stay with a Llewellyn, not a full English Setter.

In terms of color, I love them all. The blue belton is the prettiest, but the cinammon belton is too, and of course I'm emotionally partial to the tri-color because of Maggie. I think I might like to go with a less heavily colored dog than Maggie, but it's not a big deal.

In terms of age, it might be better from a hunting point of view to go with an older, "tested" puppy, but for my girls' sake, I'd like to get a very young one. I want them to have the whole experience of growing up with a puppy and dealing with all the issues. We got Maggie right at 8 weeks. By they way, she still has the cloudy ulcer spot on her right eye, right at the top of the iris. We've had it checked over the years and it's never been a problem. As for getting a young pup, Maggie and Katie will mother it.

I'm still quail hunting, but not nearly as much sicnce Regan and Delaney joined us. My dream someday is to have a place where I can hunt within sight of my house. As it is, I have a deer/quail lease in NW Oklahoma, about 2.5
hours away.

Anyway, please advise as to timing and what you would recommend that I do. I want to get the next puppy before Maggie and Katie get too old to hunt a little with it. (I don't hunt them much, maybe an hour at a time, maybe
twice a day, given their age. Does that seem reasonable to you? Maggie will hunt until she collapses, if allowed. Shadow's the same way.) I'll come pick him up. I was thinking I'd like to come get a pup in January or February,
but if you have dogs now and won't then, I could do it sooner. Or I could wait until March or April. You tell me what's best.

By the way, what should I expect in term's of Maggie's life expectancy? She's always been very healthy, although she has a slight heart murmur that has not worsened in the last couple of years. She was not spayed. We've kept her weight at a pretty good level, in the high 40s, sometimes as high as 52 pounds. Again, she's a big girl -- she's always been bigger than Shadow.

I hope you and Drenda continue to be well -- the picture of your grandson on the home page is priceless. We have certainly been blessed over the years, and Maggie's been a very important member of the family. Steph and I are so
pleased to have found her. She's literally been a member of the family -- I tell people that Steph bought Maggie as a ruse to get me to marry her for her dog.

Look forward to speaking with you soon.

Subject: My pup Molly (Sweet Molly Malone)

Dear Al and Drenda,

Sorry that it has been so long without a status report. Molly is doing well. She was 33 1/2 pounds at 18 weeks so she is certainly  enjoying her food. She housebroke beautifully using the original shipping crate and gates to keep her in the kitchen. Her 3 or 4 mistakes  were our fault and she quickly achieved perfect control. Our vets and
their staff all fuss over her. A minor problem with giardia cleared up in a week and she has been in excellent health.
She is very intelligent and has adapted to our family schedule easily. She comes when called, sits on command, kennels willingly in her new full size crate and retrieves naturally. Her socialization is progressing well. She enjoys contact with other dogs and likes people.  She has been a bit nippy, but only in play or to get your attention.
We go happy timing in the woods of a nearby state park 2 or 3 times a week. I am comfortable with her off lead since she checks back with me frequently and recalls well. She is comfortable in the water and splashes and plays in it. She has learned that she can swim by jumping into water over her head. No problem.
I have been reasonably active on the Llewellin forum and posted several pictures of her. Perhaps you have seen them. She is beautiful.

Thank you for our wonderful dog,
 Peter and Judy Christensen

Boomer pointing a quail behind and then on top of the wood pile at 3 1/2 months.  Quail got away.

Playing with Boomer is the best way I can think of relax at the end of the day.  Great pup.

This is Lizzy's very first planted bird in the bird field at almost seven months. (just got home and got them loaded on here) I am just amazed with her!!! She pointed and let me walk all the way around her and take four pic's before jumping in. She is just bird crazy!!! I'm just letting her chase them right now after I step in and flush (firing off my blank pistol) or she flushes them, so I haven't shot a bird to retrieve yet but when I do I'll let you know. You sure did a great job in breeding with her. I remember you told me that your royacelle 4 was the most natural you'd seen before my purchase and I am just a very happy royacelle owner.
THANKYOU AND DRENDA!!!!

Alfred

I thought I would give you an update on my puppy.  He is now 14 weeks old and is doing great.  He has been extremely easy to train.  I have two very smart Golden Retrievers, but I have to say, I think he is just as smart.  We sit down everyday to watch his dad on OLN and I think from these poses you might say he "favors his dad".

Thanks again for all your help and advice, you have gained a loyal customer.  I'll be back for another one of these great dogs in the future.

Hello Alfred,

I have enclosed two photos of one of your dogs. The first is the best point I was able to capture on film. He has had many a good looking point, I just have not been as good with the camera. The point is on a quail single after an immediately previous covey point, flush, shoot, retrieve and bag. This particular day was warm and windy. Not the ideal hunting conditions and it did not matter for your dog's performance.

The second is of a pheasant retrieve. One of the better photos of his retrieves as it is in a cut crop field.

I have influenced 9 others about your Llewellins. Four have come back and told me they have or showed me one of your dogs. The other five did not inform me of their decision. Feel free to continue to use me as a reference.
I do not oversell the dogs and provide as objective of an evaluation as possible. Nonetheless, my next dogs will come from you.

The one question that has set a trend is which strain is my dog from. The answer has been it does not matter as I did not choose a strain, I selected the breeder. However, the other answer and the one that is wanted is the dog  in the pictures and on the web site article is from your Dashing Drenett Bondhu, Irishking Bondhu Ashly line, litter 93-MM.
